At 59, Brenda Hewlett had never held a hockey stick. So when she became one of five people chosen to test their skills (and luck) shooting a hockey puck into a tiny goal 114 feet away, no one expected her to walk off the ice as the owner of the big prize.
Frenchie’s Ford in Massena, N.Y., sponsored the game, in which the Warriors faced the 1000 Islands Privateers. The dealership’s web manager, Clayton Plourde, posted a video of Hewlett’s shot online and wrote that after he asked her to go first, she said, “Oh God, I don’t want to be first; I’m going to look foolish.”

She donned a helmet, walked gingerly to one end of an ice rink and took a few practice swings into the air. She then sent a puck sailing into the puck-sized hole at the other end of the rink.
The announcer made no attempt to contain his excitement. As the puck got closer to the goal and looked like it might go in, he let out a high-pitched scream.
“The lady took a shot, it was straight as an arrow, kept going, and going, and going. And went into the net,” he recapped. “Unbelievable. I have been going to hockey games going on 60 years, and I have never, ever seen anybody put the puck in the hole.”
