In 2011, Sarah Burton designed two of the year’s most talked-about dresses. In January, a red silk gown worn by Michelle Obama to a state dinner drew controversy after many within the industry argued that the First Lady should have worn an American designer for the formal event. Three months later, Burton became a household name after Kate Middleton married Prince William on April 29 in a lace, Grace Kelly-inspired gown that she designed. Celebrities aside, Burton has impressed fashion editors with her collections for Alexander McQueen, the late designer whom she assisted for 14 years. It’s hard to imagine that Burton will be able to outdo herself in 2012, but given Middleton’s continued penchant for her designs, the task is hardly impossible.
