July 25, 1956 – Just off Nantucket, the Swedish American Line’s Stockholm struck the Italian Line’s Andrea Doria, which was wrapping up a nine-day voyage from Genoa to New York. The Swedish ship, which had just begun its homeward journey, lost five crew members. The ultra-luxurious Andrea Doria capsized and sank 11 hours after the crash, losing 45 passengers. If the ship had sunk faster, however, the disaster could have been much greater.
