New Orleans is not the only city to celebrate Fat Tuesday. Brazil and Italy hold world-famous parties, but other countries also have distinct pre-Lent traditions. Belgium’s carnival, held in the town of Binche, has a history dating back to the 14th century. On Mardi Gras, local men don resplendent red, yellow and black costumes, clogs and wax masks featuring tiny spectacles. These masqueraders, known as Gilles, parade through the center of town, shaking rattles made of sticks to ward of evil spirits. Later in the day, they don ostrich-feather hats and pelt the crowd with oranges.
