German-born American Isidor Straus was the co-founder of Macy’s. During the shipwreck it is said that 67-year-old Straus refused to board the lifeboat before the younger men and women had a place. His wife Ida also refused to board the half-full boat, preferring to die with her husband than to be separated from him. They both died together during the sinking.
