Krishnan Suthanthiran, an Indian-born engineer who made his fortune selling medical devices, recently purchased the 322-acre mining town of Kitsault, British Columbia, in which he hopes to fund a rotating colony of 300 to 400 artists and scientists who will collaborate on solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. MSN reports that Suthanthiran bought the town for $5.7 million (a steal, in his opinion) and has already spent an additional $4 million developing it. He hopes to generate income by hosting retreats for celebrities and corporations. The residential do-gooders, however, would receive free room and board. Suthanthiran told MSN that he hopes to eventually “eradicate disease, malnutrition and poverty.”
