Madonna is seen performing in Philadelphia during her MDNA North American tour opener on August 28th.

Madonna’s never been known to be restrained with her words, but even she had to clarify her provocative endorsement of the president at a  concert in Washington D.C. earlier this week. The endlessly touring Queen of Pop has now chalked up her remarks about the president being a “black Muslim” as just “being ironic.”

“I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim – though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?” read a statement from the pop star released through her representative, according to Rolling Stone. “The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is – nor should anyone else in America.”

In a widely circulated video, Madonna entreats concertgoers to vote for the president this November. “Ya’ll better vote for f—ing Obama OK?,” she said.

“For better or for worse, alright, we have a black Muslim in the White House, OK? Now that is the s—. It’s some amazing s—, it means there is hope in this country. And Obama is fighting for gay rights, OK, so support the man goddamnit.”

As many have noted, supporting the president by perpetuating a falsehood about his religion isn’t the greatest endorsement. But, of course, Madonna has also given her seal of approval at a New York concert recently by unveiling a tattoo with “OBAMA” emblazoned on her back.
