SNL took the opportunity to mock MSNBC’s reaction to the presidential debates, with Rachel Maddow (played by Cecily Strong) calling the debate “the worst thing that ever happened anywhere.” For this sketch, Jason Sudeikis sheds his Mitt Romney persona to play Chris Matthews, sputtering with anger and disgust at the President’s less-than-stellar performance in Colorado. Kenan Thompson chimes in as Al Sharpton, doing his best to rationalize Obama’s shortcomings with a variety of excuses: jet lag, high altitude, the difference between Denver toilets and D.C. toilets. Throughout the skit, Sharpton’s theories become more elaborate and absurd, culminating with the following: Romney and Obama switched bodies on the night of the debate, leaving Romney with all the charisma. But there’s no convincing Chris Matthews, who says the only way Obama could now recover would be “to go full-blown Tyson. Show up at the next debate with a face tattoo.”
