Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, in New Zealand, April 1983.
If Prince William and Kate Middleton have a girl, there will be a groundswell of popular support from the British public – and beyond – for William to name it in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana. While other members of the Royal family may not be entirely comfortable with the decision (and that’s putting it mildly), William was extremely close to his mother, who died at 36 in a car crash in Paris in 1997. The couple may decide that there’s no finer way for Diana, and her legacy, to live on than via the granddaughter she never knew.
