Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, in Canada in June 1983.
If Kate and William decide that naming their daughter Diana would be simply too contentious for the rest of the family to accept, perhaps a compromise is available by going with Princess Di’s middle name, Frances. While it’s not a classic royal choice, it would be a modern one, and entirely in keeping with the youthful, progressive direction towards which the couple appear to be steering the monarchy. The bookmakers aren’t ruling it out either. “William and Kate seem a little more modern than we’re used to, a little more down with the kids, so there’s a chance they might come up with a more modern name,” a Paddy Power spokesman tells TIME.
