A few weeks ago, NewsFeed marveled at the stunning photos astronaut Chris Hadfield has been tweeting from space. And now, the Canadian cosmonaut is at it again with another astronomical art project. This time, he’s recorded a duet with Canadian rock band the Barenaked Ladies. Yes, really.
“Chris and I were able to write a song together while he was training in Russia for the mission that he’s currently on and then we were able to record the song with him in space,” Barenaked Ladies frontman Ed Robertson told CBC News. “It’s really incredible when you think about it.”

The tune, titled “I.S.S. (Is Someone Singing),” debuted on CBC last week with a live performance that included Hadfield, the Barenaked Ladies and a glee choir from Toronto’s Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts. Hadfield sang his part — and played a guitar that he just happened to have with him — from his post aboard the International Space Station. The collaboration was officially commissioned by the CBC Music and the Coalition for Music Education as part of the upcoming Music Monday celebrations, an initiative that advocates for the important of music education.
According to Robertson, this tune is meant to be a “celebration not about the remoteness of space, but about the connectedness of a human being on the I.S.S. who looks down and sees the whole planet in a way that, from our perspective, we don’t have the opportunity to.”
The collaboration is just further evidence that everyone should really be following Hadfield on Twitter. Who knows what other surprises he’ll hit us with next?
