Spoofing a 1990s-era instructional video, dating advisors Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon use McCarthy to demonstrate how to carry conversation with a man and mask that stench of desperation. Safe conversation topics include sports scores, blazers, personal health scares and travel mugs. It wouldn’t be a Melissa McCarthy sketch without a little crass humor, which of course, she managed to fit in at the end. Though not the strongest skit to close the night, “The Art of the Encounter” still highlights why McCarthy was invited back a second time.
