The hidden hive of hackers known as Anonymous are reportedly making a foray into the world of established media: according to the BBC, the group is attempting to launch own news website.

Anonymous posted their plans for the news site on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, with the aim of raising $2, 000. Their campaign ended up bypassing the initial goal and closed with a whopping $54, 798.

As explained on their pledge page, the hackers collective wants to upgrade Your Anon News, their news service, to a website that can report its own stories rather than solely aggregate.

The aim is to create an independent news source.

According to the BBC, the money raised on the Indiegogo page — started by an accountholder named Jackal Anon — will be used for developing and hosting the website. The fund rewarded their 1, 000 contributors with mugs, t-shirts and hoodies.
