As former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords was honored at the TIME 100 Gala, she and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, took time to honor Christina-Taylor Green — the 9-year-old girl who was killed in the shooting that wounded Giffords. Christina-Taylor had come to the Jan. 8, 2011 event in Tucson, Ariz., to see her congresswoman; instead, she and five other people were killed and 12 wounded when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a shopping mall parking lot.

“Tonight we want to honor and celebrate someone who inspires us daily, but someone we never met,” said Kelly. “We  treasure the stories of the joy she took in life, and we try to bring joy to our days. We listen to music and Gabby dances, and we try to make the world a better place, too.”
