With so many ducklings found wandering aimlessly on a road, there should be a dedicated class for mama ducks on how to navigate their way to safety.

Why did the ducklings cross the racetrack? Who knows, but when it happened last Friday in Detroit—just as cars began practicing for the IZOD IndyCar Series—they narrowly escaped with their lives.

At first, several cars scooted to avoid the ducks. But because the animal family didn’t have a clear escape route, workers at the track eventually stopped the practice to personally escort them into the wilderness (after cornering them in a safety truck).

Otherwise, as one ESPN anchor noted, “It could have been a very different piece of video.”
