Formed in 1971 by Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, The Eagles sold more albums in the 1970s than any other band, thanks to their classic 1976 release Hotel California. After a decade of success and intensive touring, the band broke up in 1980—and it didn’t end well. After years of acrimony, the band members embarked on successful solo careers, and vowed never to reunite. Then in 1994, following a wave of nostalgia rock, the Eagles returned to the stage with the Hell Freezes Over tour. “For the record,” Glenn Frey announced at their first live concert, “we never broke up, we just took a 14-year vacation.”
