Headphones on and in the zone, 34-year-old Meredith Fitzmaurice made a wrong turn during a half marathon Sunday.
The mistake caused her to accidentally enter the course of the Heroes Marathon in Amherstburg, Ontario … and finish in first place.
“I had only ever run 20 miles,” rather than the 26.2 miles that make up a marathon, Fitzmaurice told the Ottawa Citizen. “But I think at that point the adrenalin just pulled me through.”
It was a happy mistake though. As the first woman to finish the race, which counts as a win even though she was 10th overall, she qualified for the Boston Marathon.
