Bar Employee Fired for Joke about Domestic Abuse

Texas employee crosses the line with sidewalk sign and draws national outrage

There’s a fine line between funny and offensive. And crossing that line can get you fired.

That’s what a bar employee in Austin, Texas learned this week, when he wrote a sidewalk sign that read: ‘I like my beer like I like my violence: domestic.’

Instead of drawing in customers, the sign drew outrage and landed his workplace in the national spotlight. After the incident, Minibar owner Alex Elmiger  told local media that he will be donating a dollar from every domestic beer sold this month to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
