A fire at Gabila’s Knishes on Long Island, the world’s biggest knish maker, has led to a nationwide shortage of the potato-filled treats. But hold the kvetching: factory owners have promised the shortage will end by Thanksgivukkah.
The Sept. 24 fire ruined the machines that make “The Original Coney Island Square Knish,” which can also come stuffed with spinach and kasha.
Patrons in search of one of the 15 million knishes Gabila’s sells nationwide every year have schlepped from store to store, according to the factory owner in the wake of the knish shortage, to no avail.
“For the last month I haven’t had any knishes — my heart is broken,” Carol Anfuso, a native New Yorker who lives in Atlanta told the Associated Press.
