Louisiana ranks worst, while Vermont is best for drivers.

Louisiana is much loved for its jazz music, tasty crawfish and bacchanalian Mardi Gras celebrations, but now the Bayou State’s got another, less impressive distinction: home to the worst drivers in the nation.

Drawing on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the website CarInsuranceComparison.com reached this conclusion based on these criteria: fatality rates, drunk driving, tickets, careless driving and failure to obey traffic signs and wear seat belts. Lest you think this study is less than rigorous, the site is quick to point out that Louisiana ranked worst in its last survey as well.

  4. Texas
  5. Alabama

And here are the 5 states with the best drivers:

  1. Vermont
  2. Utah
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Minnesota
  5. Oregon

Other states stood out as worst in specific categories:

Montana: Highest rate of fatalities and drunk driving

Florida: Most careless drivers

Nevada: Highest ticket rate

Kentucky: Highest failure to obey traffic signs and wear seat belts
