A councilman from Indian Trail, N.C., submitted a resignation letter written in Klingon on Thursday, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Full text in the language of a warrior race used in the Star Trek TV series is on the newspaper’s website. The translation reads:

Teach (the) city (the) constitution
I will return next time to (witness) victory.
Resignation occurs in 2014 the 31st of January.
Perhaps today is a good day (to) resign.
David Waddell

Waddell told the Observer that he was trying to be funny, but Indian Trail Mayor Michael Alvarez did not get the joke, calling the letter “an embarrassment.” Waddell’s term expires in December of 2015, but he said he plans to focus on a write-in campaign on the Constitution Party line to challenge the state’s Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan.
