If the zombies ever do rise up in the U.S., Canada will be prepared. On Thursday in the House of Commons, Canadian politicians debated the prospect of a zombie invasion and demanded to know what the government was prepared to do in case a (typically) American epidemic began to spread northwards.

Winnipeg representative Pat Martin asked Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird if he was coordinating with the United States to prepare for an eventual zombie apocalypse. It wasn’t an entirely serious discussion, of course; as the Washington Post put it, the back-and-forth was a “playful jab” at the current strain of zombie-themed emergency preparedness drills in both the U.S. and Canada. The Centers for Disease Control have published a graphic novel titled Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemicaccording to the Post, a mock zombie invasion also served as the basis of a recent disaster-planning exercise.

“I don’t need to tell you, Mr. Speaker, that zombies don’t recognize borders,” Martin said. “A zombie invasion in the United States could easily turn into a continent-wide pandemic if it’s not contained.”

Baird zippily replied how “dead-icated” he was to the matter of preventing a zombie crisis. “Under the leadership of this prime minister, Canada will never become a safe haven for zombies, ever,” he declared.
