Hello Kitty may have reached the Final Frontier, but she’s never been to Comic-Con before. That all changes this weekend, when Sanrio brings its beloved Kitty and her friends to San Diego for the annual comic convention, which runs from July 18 through the 21st.
Sanrio will make its official debut with “Hello Kitty Fashion Music Wonderland,” an interactive experience loosely based on Alice in Wonderland, but starring Hello Kitty. The weekend’s Hello Kitty event will feature a pop-up shop, offer Sanrio nail art, and, of course, will feature a visit by Kitty-chan herself. It is open to the public at Comic-Con’s Interactive Zone at Petco Park.

To prepare for her debut at Comic-Con, Hello Kitty is also introducing a first ever graphic novel, which will be published by Viz Media. According to Viz, the book will take Hello Kitty on “an adventure that takes her from being a fashion designer to a rock star to an underground explorer, where she discovers a world of wonder with magic potions, tea parties and a queen who loves tarts!” Viz will release a second comic — “Hello Kitty, Vol. 1: Here We Go!” — this fall. No word on whether the comic will be printed on Hello Kitty stationary.
If Hello Kitty as Alice in Wonderland isn’t your cup of tea, and you would prefer, say, a Hello Kitty as imagined by Darren Aronofsky, the company is also launching a fan-fiction contest on its Facebook page. Fans will be able to submit their ideas for the next graphic novel’s story.
