As the Australian Open, the first major tennis tournament of the year, kicks off today in Melbourne Park, NewsFeed decided to look back at the attendees who have put together the most elaborate costumes in the past decade.
Some displays have jibbed with current events, like that time people paid tribute to President Barack Obama, holding up masks in his likeness on Jan. 22, 2009, two days after he was inaugurated:
However, not all displays inspired by public figures have been flattering. On Jan. 21, 2010, during a match on Day 4, rowdy fans poked fun at Tiger Woods after he admitted to “infidelity”, holding up signs that said “I’ve been with Tiger” and one that depicted him as a pimp with cash coming out of his pocket:
Most of the elaborate displays come from fans who are cheering on players from their countries, such as the duo that pretended to be Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh (left) and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, while cheering on Heather Watson of Great Britain in a second round match on Jan. 16, 2013:
While this fan seems to have her heart set on the Scottish player Andy Murray during the men’s singles final match on Jan. 27, 2013. However, she must have been heartbroken afterwards because Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated him, cinching his third consecutive Australian Open title:
