Less than two weeks into his term at New York City’s new mayor, Bill de Blasio committed a shocking gaffe: he was seen eating a slice of pizza with a knife and fork. (This is considered a major faux pas among New Yorkers and prompted many to question if de Blasio is really suited to lead this city’s millions of pizza purists.)
On last night’s episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart decided to weigh in on the scandal. At first, he was pretty unperturbed. “Unless he rolls up a pie into a ball and takes it as a suppository at Grimaldi’s, I don’t see the problem.” But then Stewart sees the footage of the newly-minted mayor wielding a knife and fork, and he cannot contain his rage. “Motherf—er!”
Stewart takes several more minutes to shame de Blasio, who offered the excuse that in his ancestral homeland of Italy, people often eat pizza with forks and knives. “Were you elected the mayor of Italy?” Stewart demanded. “No. Look out the window. You see a Sistine Chapel or a Leaning Tower of Pisa? No, you don’t. You see several junkyards and a tanning salon. You know why? Because you’re in f–king Staten Island.”
