Clearly, this is the most useful the U.S. Census has ever been.
Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Williams Institute at UCLA Law School has found that the town with the most gay couples in the U.S. is the idyllic beach spot of Provincetown, Mass. Just how gay is P-town? Gawker reports that a whopping 163 same-sex couples per 1,000 households live in the little scenic town. Second and third on the list are Wilton Manors, Fla. and Palm Springs, Calif. with 140 and 115 same-sex couples per 1,000 households respectively.

Of course, there are some major caveats to Provincetown’s designation as the gayest town. First of all, since the census doesn’t specifically ask for a person’s sexual orientation, data was only collected from surveys where people made a point of noting that they were part of a same-sex couple.Which obviously means a lot of shy or reserved gay men and women were unaccounted for.
Secondly, not all the data is in yet; North Dakota, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Tennessee have yet to report. Of course, few people would assume that any of these states are home to any particularly gay towns, but for the sake of thoroughness, we’d just like to know.
And lastly, the data only counts same-sex couples, neglecting who knows how many gay singletons. Hey, Census, just because a person is single doesn’t mean they don’t exist! Sheesh.
