Knox wept while it was announced the court found the evidence against her to be unreliable. Though the court upheld Knox’s defamation charge for accusing nightclub owner Patrick Lumumba of the murder, Knox was allowed to leave jail immediately. There was some applause heard in the courtroom after the verdict was read, though the Associated Press reports that many outside the courthouse yelled “Shame, shame” and the Kercher family looked on with grim expressions.

Nearly four years after she was charged, Knox is a free woman. But the media firestorm she is likely to face now will redefine life as she knows it.
