Locust Swarms Descend on Egypt Like Biblical Plague

What might you do if a churning black cloud rising over the horizon turned out to be tens of millions of flying insects headed straight for you?

Swarms of locusts fly over Al-Moqattam district of Cairo on March 2, 2013.

What might you do if a churning black cloud rising over the horizon turned out to be tens of millions of locusts headed straight for you?

The word you’re looking for is probably “hide,” though if we’ve learned anything from books like On the Banks of Plum Creek, it’s that there’s not much you can do when confronting a swarming, migratory bug bent on devouring every bit of vegetation in sight.

Folks in Giza, Egypt — home of the famous pyramids — are presently grappling with just such a plague, having to fend off upwards of 30 million locusts according to official estimates (via Arutz Sheva). The insects arrived this weekend, coincidentally just a few weeks before the Jewish Passover (March 25 through April 2). In the biblical book of Exodus, locusts are one of 10 plagues delivered upon Egypt after the pharaoh refused to free the enslaved Israelites . (The rest of the plagues include all sorts of nastiness, including frogs, lice, hail, boils and the death of every firstborn Egyptian son). It sounds like this modern-day version is already taking its toll, too, attacking farms in the area and doing considerable damage to local agriculture.

Officials are warning locals not to burn tires (apparently smoking rubber is to grasshoppers what citronella is to mosquitoes) out of concern that the fires could spread. And in nearby Cairo, they’ve reportedly had some success dealing with the insect inflow: Egypt Independent cites the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation as claiming to have eradicated 95% of the Cairo-specific swarms, though estimates place that total at just north of 17,000 — a tiny fraction of the total.

The upside? It’s not clear there is one, although locusts are considered edible in parts of the Middle East so there’s plenty of protein for the adventurous. Even better: local meteorologists predict strong winds on the way, which Egypt’s Agriculture Minister has said he hopes blows the bugs out of the country altogether.

Eat them, they are high in protein and unless they eat us, they are pretty vulnerable to be netted, fried and used as either food or fertilizer.

people if you are going to quote scripture get it right. God said he would not flood the earth again not send the plagues. also he said "this" generation would be the end times generation referring to the day Israel became a nation in one day He was referring to the generation at that time 1948 not His generation. 70 yrs are appointed unto man that is the length of a generation so add 70 to 1948. we are on the thresh hold of the tribulation period. He said there would be signs and wonders in the last days and we are seeing them. and as for the rapture no such thing in the final moments prior to armmegadon  Christ will appear with the saints reward in His hand and the dead in Christ shall rise and Christ's living children will be caught up to meet Him and they will proceed to do battle on earth and then the 1000 yr reign of Christ will begin.

@MarieHerrera Could you tell us what the "signs and wonders" are that we have apparently been seeing? I've seen one natural phenonmenon after another, in a steady and absolutely continuous succession, from the time I was born, which happened to be after Israel became a nation. Not a single wonder or sign.

@MarieHerrera Yes, people...if you are going to quote any work of fiction, you need to get the quote correct. Doesn't make it any less a work of fiction if you get the quote wrong, but still, you should get the quote correct.

LOL. Saw this comment and it rings so true. A WORK OF FICTION. I don't understand if this all powerful God could send all these prophecies why couldn't he give us a date and time to go with them....? Doesn't seem like hes all that loving of a God or all that powerful of one either, the guy can't even tell us when exactly this "tribulation" is going to occur....what a joke.

Hmm, God's attitude towards Egypt? Send them locus swarms to destroy their agriculture. Obama's attitude towards Egypt? Send them $250 mil of hard earned US money for their warmongering. I think it is pretty clear, Obama and God disagrees.

Didn't the Old Testament god use to pull this crap whenever he got bored? And then he promised to never pull this sh*t again? Is he now back to his old tricks?

Just watch the signs people around the world.  Things are happening at a fast pace and most have their heads in the sand.  You're living in the End Times and they're sooooooooo close.

slbharris

@TomSmith The one who thinks an insect infestation is something supernatural accuses others of having their heads in the sand. That's rich.  They're insects. Sometimes in certain areas there are insect infestations.  Ever been to a beach?  Sometimes there are swarms of jellyfish all over the beach.  Sometimes there are piles of seaweed. Other times there are none of either.  Sometimes we have thunderstorms, earthquakes, tornadoes, mudslides, floods, wildfires.  They are all naturally occurring phenomena.  The earth is an active place.  Maybe you should put the bible down once in a while and pick up a science book.  You might not be so befuddled by the world around you.  And if there were a god, couldn't he/she find something better to do than annoy people with insects? Think Tom.  Think.

@slbharris Gods wrath is being poured out because of the deep measure of sin. A life without God as our creator has no purpose nor meaning and as humans, you wouldnt be no more special than the rocks in my driveway according to science. God is real and we are made in his image. Time is running low, seek the Lord because the Kingdom of God is at hand!

@TomSmith It's been the "End Times" since Jesus started walking around in sandals. Jesus said the "End Times" are his generation. And ever since then morons have been saying the "End Times" are just months away. For over 2000 years. And idiots like you lap it up EVERY SINGLE TIME. Keep hallucinating. Oh and make sure when Jesus comes down on a white horse to rapture people, you're not sitting on the can taking a dump. LMAO!!! No more trips to the can for you!!! LMFAO!!!

Huge locusts traps

Ship them to starving countries labeled as chicken, they'll gobble it up. The Chinese do it to the U.S. Everyday with all their fake labeled food imported to the U.S.

How bout 'locust infestation of Egypt'?  Drop the bible crap.

OldGeezer
OldGeezer

I lived in Cairo from 1954 to 1956, and witnessed a locust invasion like what's described here then. Clouds of insects arriving, eating all plant life - trees, shrubs, grass, flowers, everything. I can remember throwing rocks into trees and shrubs and seeing clouds of locusts briefly explode from them, and then settle back and keep on eating. My older brother had a pellet rifle and was shooting them - but since it was a single shot rifle, he certainly did nothing serious to stop them...

This is not the first swarm to appear, and I sincerely doubt it will be the last one... is it surprising that these swarms have been occurring since biblical times? Hardly...

If this is true then it might be giving some credence to the bible stories about locusts being used as a weapon to garner freedom for the Israelites. It might make the whole bible believable for some who doubt it.

uckermanf

@hummingbird What do you mean "if this is true?" Locust plagues have happened in various places. It is not an unknown thing. Good grief! From under what rock do you people crawl out that you can be so utterly clueless all the time?

@uckermanf There's no need for you to be rude as we try to have a civil discussion. I only said "if it's true" because you can't always believe everything in the media. The media do get some stories wrong or they exaggerate. I know that region has locust swarms like this so I don't doubt that it can actually happen.

uckermanf

@hummingbird @AlexanderStampley Yeah, so much for that "civil discussion" you were talking about. If you don't agree that this is some biblical sign of the end times, you are wicked, corrupt, and going to hell.

You people are a bunch of hypocritical idiots, and if there is a God, I can not wait for you to be rejected by him because of your self-righteous BS. Why an God would want that in their presence is beyond me. I think you people are in for a rude awakening.

@hummingbird The hearts of the nonbelievers are in darkness and corruption is all that will come from a wicked heart. We have witness this type of behavior in many physical conversations. They don't have peace nor can express it because they have not receive Christ. Watch as they continuously blasphem cuss and mock our Savior. Its already written. Pray for them as I will. they cannot understand truth because their minds are clouded with sin. Stay firm on the word of God, we're witnessing to a dying world my sister. Yes the path is narrow, sadly but true. God Bless

No, it just goes to show that this is a normal event of nature, and has nothing to do with a vengeful omnipotent being.

If anything, this makes the story lose it's religious impact. Hopefully people who are silly enough to believe the Exodus story to be LITERAL HISTORICAL FACT will come closer to realizing how absurd it is.

On March 2, 2013 I visited the pyramids in Giza, Cairo, Egypt and didn't see even one locust or grasshopper. I didn't even see a hoard of tourists. I'd check that story about the locusts, considering the source. Sigh. They say the Ministry of Antiquities is thinking of renting out the pyramids to Qatari investors. That's a story to look in to.....................

There was no Islam back when the locust plague befell Egypt during the time of Moses, that was several thousand years ago, the Egyptians were pagans back then and there were no Christians either.  Read and maybe get some education before you make any dumb comments toward any religion you ignorant ass.
