Perhaps New Yorkers have gotten too used to having Hollywood hunk Ryan Gosling break up their fights and save them from car accidents. Because you let down your guard for one second and this happens.

Actor Michael McKean, famous for a string of comedic characters from David St. Hubbins of the mock rockumentary This Is Spinal Tap to Lenny on the sitcom Laverne and Shirley, is in stable condition after being hit by a car on Manhattan’s Upper West Side Tuesday.

According to People, McKean, 64, was walking on the sidewalk Tuesday around 3 p.m. when a car went out of control and jumped the curb at 86th and Broadway. The actor was knocked into the street and reportedly began coughing up blood.

He was being treated at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital for a broken leg and facial lacerations.

McKean’s manager, Harriet Sternberg, told the New York Post that the actor “sustained multiple injuries and we are trying to find out the extent of other injuries.”

The three car passengers were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries; no criminal charges are currently expected in the accident.

McKean lives on the Upper West Side with his wife, actress Annette O’Toole. His other notable roles include appearances in satirical documentaries including Best in Show and A Mighty Wind. He is currently appearing in an all-star Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man.

“He’s upset about missing his curtain,” Sternberg told the New York Post. “He’s never missed a performance in his career.”
