This picture taken on August 16, 2012 shows Chinese beachgoers wearing body suits and protective head masks, dubbed "face-kinis" by Chinese netizens, on a crowded public beach in Qingdao, northeast China's Shandong province.
Facemasks aren’t the only thing Chinese and other Asian women have used to protect their skin: long sleeves, parasols and wide-brimmed hats are also popular. Still, not everyone is buying the masks. One bather told the New York Times she found the outfit “way over the top” — although she herself was interviewed while sitting beneath a sun umbrella, “wearing a sun hat, sunglasses, a polka-dot surgical mask, a long-sleeve shirt and lace gloves” and with a shirt draped over her legs for good measure.
