When Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975, many wondered if the band could exist without him. Anthony Phillips’ 1970 exit involved less fanfare, but he was no less important to the group that would grow to über-fame in his absence.
Genesis was formed among classmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Chris Stewart and Phillips in 1967. Phillips played guitar and sang backup vocals for the fledgling band.
But Phillips wasn’t cut out for the bright lights and booming venues Genesis was destined for. He only recorded one album, Trespass, with the group before bowing out because of stage fright. Bandmates weren’t sure if Genesis could continue, but their next album included two songs from his time with them and evidence of his distinct guitar skills.
Genesis put out four of its most prolific albums in the four years that followed.
Phillips has remained involved in music and has collaborated with several former Genesis mates.
