Angry demonstrators rip the stars and stripes from the United States Embassy on Aug. 19, 1974 in Nicosia during a demonstration against American policy on Cyprus. American ambassador to Cyprus, Rodger P. Davies was killed by gunfire during the incident.
In an eerily similar incident to the death of Chris Stevens in Libya, Rodger Davies had served just a year as the U.S. ambassador to Cyprus when he was killed during a raid on the American embassy by angry protesters. The demonstration brought out between 300 and 600 Greek Cypriots who were demonstrating against the U.S.’s failure to stop Turkish troops from taking hold of part of the island. Davies was seeking shelter in a hallway at the embassy building in Nicosia when a bullet struck him in the chest.
