Romney and Obama talk over each other as they answer questions during a town hall style debate at Hofstra University October 16, 2012 in Hempstead, New York.
Last night’s second debate on Long Island brought out a solid cross-section of, well, Long Island. Posing the questions was an audience of 82 undecided voters who challenged the candidates on issues foreign and domestic, as both Romney and Obama showed their teeth and often clashed. And as in every debate so far — from Big Bird to malarkey — the Internet siezed on one moment that crystallized the event. Last night it was Romney’s comment about the “binders full of women” which helped him stock his cabinet with female advisors when he was Massachusetts governor. But the details, to Twitter, were rather meaningless — it was that odd turn of phrase that did the trick, inspiring single-serving Twitter accounts like @RomneyBinders. And both candidates seemingly needed help getting the name “Lorraine” correct. These events, and dozens more, inspired more than 7.2 million tweets over the 90-minute debate. Here are some of the best.
