SNL took the opportunity this week to riff on social media users’ political commentary — and the analysts who take it all too seriously. Aidy Bryant appeared on the “Weekend Update” segment as social media expert Kourtney Barnes, chatting with host Seth Meyers about the crucial role of social media in gauging public opinion. But, of course, the examples she provided were of Facebook and Twitter users sharing “opinions” that were absurd, inane and/or disgusting in nature. (So, you know, they were going for truth here.)
“Do you have any comments or people whose opinions are sort of like, eloquent or well-stated?” Meyers asked. “Well that’s the beauty of social media Seth, everyone’s opinion is equal,” Barnes replied. “When David Brooks of the New York Times says Mitt Romney does not have the passion for the stuff he’s talking about, it’s no more important than when Facebook user Jim Dunlap says, ‘Obama = Poop.'”
