Captain Kangaroo
He may have been known as “the Captain,” but Bob Keeshan, who played the beloved children’s show character Captain Kangaroo, never achieved that rank in the military. Keeshan did serve—he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1945, but World War II ended before he could see any action. Oddly, Keeshan’s military career became the subject of an urban legend in the 1970s when it was alleged he fought with actor Lee Marvin at the Battle of Iwo Jima. Not only did Keeshan never see combat, but Marvin did not fight at Iwo Jima. The Oscar-winning actor did, however, receive a Purple Heart for an injury received during the Battle of Saipan.
