Hey, you guys, the government is still shut down. Remember that? Of course you do. And SNL writers certainly haven’t forgotten either. They weaved together parodies of both the government shutdown and Hollywood’s buzziest film, Gravity, for this week’s clever cold open. Cecily Strong and Taran Killam play the movie’s central astronauts, who reach out to mission control for help as their oxygen levels dwindle. But nobody’s there except for a lone janitor who offers only the following suggestion: “In Willy Wonka, Charlie and Grandpa use a series of small burps to get down.” Another janitor soon walks into the control room, though we suspect that was mostly just to give Kate McKinnon an excuse to show off her Ukrainian accent.
