People gather after the lighting ceremony for the Capitol Christmas tree at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, December 3, 2013.

The Capitol Christmas tree lit up the West Lawn of the Capitol at 5 p.m. on Tuesday night. The 88-foot tree arrived in D.C. from Washington state last week. It is the second tallest tree ever erected at the Capitol.

The tree — which is adorned with more than 5,o00 handmade ornaments from children across the country — will be lit nightly from dusk until 11 p.m. throughout the holidays.
