A Maine biker who stands out lately for his pink beard is using it to raise money for a local children’s hospital.
The Bangor Daily News and WGME report that Steve Betters dyed his beard pink after losing a football wager with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association in Bangor that involved the New England Patriots losing to the Denver Broncos. He calls the lost bet the “lemon”. On Feb. 11, in an effort to make lemons out of lemonade as the saying goes, he launched a Facebook page called “Lemonade for Kids” and uploaded a photo of himself holding up a pink poster that says if the picture got 500 “likes” by the end of the month, then he would donate $500 to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland, Maine. If it got 1,000, then he would donate $1,000.
It only took 24 hours for the photo to hit the 1,000 mark, and by Feb 24, it had more than 2,200.
How did Betters decide to dye his beard pink of all colors? He told CNN that his biker buddies wanted him to dye it orange for the Denver Broncos, but he “really didn’t want to wear Broncos colors, I’d rather dye it pink.”
