It’s the hot new thing that everyone’s talking about: spaces between one’s teeth!
It’s fashion week in New York City and that means trend pieces about what is hot and what is not. And apparently, the erudite culture spotters at the Wall Street Journal have peered out behind their stock tickers to tell us that having gap teeth is totally in this year:
At model casting calls for New York’s fashion week… one of the most coveted attributes is an affront to modern orthodontics: gapped teeth.

Some say the popularity of physical flaws reflects the skepticism of today’s youth toward the air-brushed perfection of the digital age.
“It’s a love for the imperfect, and the authentic,’ says Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W magazine. “These are values that are more and more important for younger generations. Originality, authenticity…in a world that is more and more digitally enhanced.”
In editorial spreads in Vogue and W, as well as ads for high-end brands like Chanel and Marc Jacobs, gaptoothed gals are having a moment.
But will this gap-toothed trend lead to impressionable youngsters getting cosmetic orthodonture in order to look as ‘unique’ as their fashion idols? NewsFeed is skeptical. So far, the Journal has only found one person who will admit to purposefully gapping their teeth: designer David Delfin, who wanted a physical manifestation of the feelings he felt after his father’s death.
Still, we are going to stay vigilant with our trend-spotting. If after a weekend of runway shows we see some newly gapped smiles in the TIME elevators on Monday, we’ll know this trend is more pernicious than we thought. (via The Frisky)
