A Public Life in State College
Jo Paterno lives an accessible and public life in State College. His home, located in a residential area near the school (really, just a few blocks from Beaver Stadium), is known by many and a frequent attraction for campus visitors. In the past, students have even broken down the goalposts at the stadium and laid them on the lawn of Paterno’s home to show appreciation for a big win. On Tuesday, hundreds of students gathered outside his home to show their support.

Athletics have the potential to bring in mountains of cash to a university, and Joe Paterno helped create that mountain and move it toward academics. In 1993, Sue and Joe Paterno started a campaign for a new campus library, eventually raising nearly $14 million—with millions of that from their own pockets—for the September 2000 opening of the Paterno Library, which houses a variety of discipline libraries.
