With over 80 percent of vegetables consumed in Swaziland imported from South Africa and more than half the population relying on food aid, Sakhiwe Shongwe and Bonkhe Mahlalela, both 14 years old, created a Unique Simplified Hydroponics Method for growing vegetables using local waste organic matter and used waste cartons, earning the pair the title of winner of the Science in Action competition. The duo dissolved nutrients in chicken manure and water, with the goal of producing a “large quantity of crops in a relative small area, without harming the environment with chemicals such as fertilizer.”
