Nothing was going to stop Tonya Harding from making the 1994 U.S. figure skating Olympic team, least of all fellow competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Harding’s ex-hsuband, Jeff Gillooly, and bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt, conspired to have Kerrigan’s leg broken before the 1994 U.S. Championships. Following a practice session during the championships in Detroit, Shane Stant used a baton to smash Kerrigan’s leg. Luckily, he only succeeded in bruising her thigh, and while it was enough to knock Kerrigan was out of the championships she was still selected to the Olympic team and went on to win a silver medal in Lillehammer. Harding, a two-time Olympian, pled guilty to covering up the attack, receiving probation and a lifetime ban from competitive figure skating. Since then she’s been in and out of the limelight, appearing in a homemade sex tape and as Paula Jones’ opponent in a celebrity boxing match. In 2000, she was arrested on a domestic violence charge for throwing a hubcap at her live-in boyfriend.
