On April 11, 2010, free-diver William Trubridge breast-stroked his way 380 feet underwater to snag a Velcro tag and a world record for the deepest free-immersion dive. Fighting nitrogen narcosis, a condition that produces symptoms similar to drunkenness at depths of more than 100 feet, the New Zealand native took 4 minutes and 9 seconds to dive — sporting a specially designed silicone wetsuit but otherwise unequipped — for the tag and emerge from the waters at Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas. The feat earned then 29-year-old Trubridge his 10th world record and vaulted him to first place in the competition to crown the world’s top free-diver. Earlier in the competition, he became the first person to dive more than 300 feet without fins.
