A bus driver in Dayton, Ohio was approached by three men on Monday wielding guns in what police say appeared to be a gang initiation. The men shot Rickey Wagoner once in the leg and twice in the chest, but he was miraculously saved–because he had a contemporary version of the Bible called “The Message” in his shirt pocket.
According to police, the Bible took the brunt of the blow from the bullets, causing Wagoner’s chest wounds to be much less severe than they would have been otherwise. He was taken to the hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery.
“There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident, because he probably should not be here,” Sgt. Michael Pauley told the Dayton Daily News.
No word on whether the Bible was bound in kevlar.
