10. Rottweiler

The Rottweiler, a strong and powerful working dog, unseated the tiny Shih Tzu for the coveted number 10 spot in this year’s list. The Rottweiler has grown in popularity over the years, steadily climbing from number 17 in 2006 to this year’s spot. While this breed may seem fierce at times, Rottweilers are intelligent, obedient animals that are great protectors. This is why they may be less than friendly with strangers, but playful and loving toward their families.

9. Dachshund

The Dachshund fell one spot this year from number eight to nine, but this pint-sized breed can consistently be found in the AKC’s top 10, even climbing to the fourth position in 2001. Dachshunds are a lively and playful breed known to be excellent hunters — hence their name, which means “badger dog” in German. Their adaptability, as well as their affinity for children, makes them the ideal family pet.
