The German Shepherd catapulted to popularity in the 1920s following the film Man from Hell’s River, featuring the famed Rin Tin Tin. The German Shepherd is an excellent companion dog, but it’s also one that is consistently used in service — either as a police or military dog. TIME even named a German Shepherd its distinguished “Animal of the Year” for helping to take down Osama bin Laden with Seal Team Six. (To be fair, the breed also could have been a Belgian Malinois.) If that’s not a breed to love, we don’t know what is.
I don't really agree... but I would take it away. I would care more about the pets more than the talking!
I find all the comments interesting. I am 58 and have owned dogs my whole life. God made all the different breeds. ANY dog can be a threat and hurt someone severely. Over the last 13 years I've had 2 Rottie's and 3 Black Lab/Rottie mix. ( my house is crowded) THEY ARE AFRAID OF THE 3 POUND KITTEN! It all goes back to how they are raised. Dogs are very intelligent and look for love and to be loved so will do what the owner teaches them to get the approval they want. I find it interesting that Rottie's, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, German Shepards get such a bad name, yet police use 3 of them to search for kidnap victims, drugs etc. and find the dogs very loyal. And the PIt Bull's knickname is Nanny because they are excellent at taking care of and protecting children. Personally, I'd rather have a Rottie that is afraid of a kitten and barks (how else are they suppose to communicate?) then a smal dog that bites at ankles. And I've owned small dogs as well. I love them all. And anyone who truly loves their dog will think it is the best breed. That's the sign of a true dog lover and provider for their loved pet.
@VickiLeaLenz I can't agree with you more, Vicki. It seems like which ever dog thread I find myself reading, someone is always debating against whether Pitbulls (or the other large breeds you listed above) are vicious or sweet and misunderstood. I also agree that God blessed us with dogs(!)They show us how to truly love and forgive and will do anything to appease their owners. There's nothing better than coming home to a wagging tail and sloppy kisses. It is also very true that the small breed dogs (ie. Chihuahuas) provoke larger breeds by attacking their ankles and biting at them. If Chihuahuas were larger, they would be classified where Pitbulls are mistakenly viewed as, dangerous. Again, I love all dogs but my heart aches for these poor dogs that get stuck behind bars in small quarters because they're either over bred or the owner is just not capable to meet their needs. I fell in love with a Pitbull not too long ago and wanted to adopt her so badly, but when introduced to my small female dog (yorkie/terrier mix) Missy was not amused. She's very protective and gets extremely jealous if I pay other dogs attention. We're slowly working with her to ensure there's nothing to be jealous or territorial about. With all this being stated I'm happy to have read your post and agree with everything you have stated. Our (and dogs) behavior, attitudes, temperament etc. develop with our environment more so than our genetics. Although some dogs are known for certain characteristics, in the end, they're all loving and loyal.
I'll be honest, I'm a golden kind of guy. I thought that I would want a German shepherd, but after seeing my cousin get one, I changed my mind. I considered getting an Australian shepherd for a while as well, but I'll probably stick with my original choice.
Looking for more information? Here are the top 5 dog breeds with a description about why you should consider one of the top 5 in the future. Perhaps your dog is on the list.
I had one it was a female and when we moved across the st from a church that has a school with it they asked us to get ride of her just because of her breed.
I was so made she was only 6 mos old at the time her name was singsing but I did not want to have a fight on are hands.
But what I don't get was we went and go a pit-bull for my young girl she trained him he was a brindle.
I don't know if it was because they seen him every Moring and every after school they would see her training him everyday after school with my help so she would know how to handle him when he got bigger.
she had him for 2yrs that was when someone took him and we never seen him again. I don't have to tell you how much she cried everyday
I love all dogs, but this past year a pitbull killed a Chihuahua puppy and attacked a small child. There are times when a dog needs to be euthanized and when they become killers and there is no place to rescue them or someone to train them, then an alternative needs to be discussed whether it be euthanasia, placed in a larged fenced in area. When an adult or child is killed then euthanesia is the only alternative.
As a Dog lover and Dog owner all my life. Beagles, Terriers, Shelties, Chihuahuas, Golden Retriever and a couple of mixed breeds and I have to say while I loved them all my most beloved is the Golden Retriever. Thee most loving dog you would ever want to meet. My Golden Sulley is such an amazing companion. I will never have another breed. So loving, so loving!
I have had 3 dogs in my lifetime. Poodle - Mutt- Yorkie. The mutt was amazingly friendly and lovable. The Poodle was adorable but with my busy lifestyle found it hard to comb and brush hair on a regular basis. I have a Yorkie who is incredibly friendly, easy to manage and hits my heart till no end. I can't imagine having any other breed other than a Yorkie. He actually saved my life while I was crushed between a wall and my car door. He actually pushed my daughter out the door with his barking. The barking 7 1/2 lb Yorkie is noted for hunting down rats. An excellent watch dog.
Absolutely love my Golden Retriever. He's my 3rd and is a great family dog. However, with all the in-breeding that appears to be happening with this breed, he may be my last. They are becoming very prone to cancer - some gene from what I hear from my vet.
shocked not to see a chihuahua on the list. i do rescue and i see sooo many of them.. i see a lot of terriers too..
The best dog is a mutt - don't pay for a dog from a breeder when there are so many good dogs out there. My dog is a Great Labrapoo spaniel/Heinz 57 breed. He is brilliant and loving and everything you would ever want in a dog and I know there are many more dogs out there like him who need a good home.
is this a joke? when i was in highschool i was brutally attacked by a flippin lab! why aren't pittbulls in on this top list? i would chose a pittbull over any of these breeds.... They are family oriented, great workout partners, very patient, loving, and protective of their owners!
and where did that mean person go? i have a couple of things to inform him about the word "pittbulls" since he wanted to try to get technical on me... AS a matter of fact the term Pittbulls come from dumb ass people that categorize these differents breed as one... for example any dog with a square head and broad shoulders which are american bulldogs, staffordshire bull terriers, american staffordshire bull terriers.... pretty much any type of bull terrier is categorized as a "pittbull" :)
@izabel87301 It's "pitbull", not "pittbull"
Pit Bulls are overrated.
@izabel87301 the list isnt * what dog izabel wants* the list is the ten most popular dogs..im sure based on actually registered dogs, i know plenty of people with pits..most unregistered. Now you say you were attacked by a lab, my kids were attacked by a pit bull....any breed can attack. You defend your pit bull, yet condemn another breed for the very reason people condemn pits. Funny stuff.
