Sonora Smart Dodd organized the first official Father’s Day in a Spokane, Washington, YMCA on June 19, 1910, in recognition of her Civil War veteran father who had raised six children on his own. But it took 62 years, several bills, and many fears of over-commercialization for it to become a permanent national holiday in the U.S. Today, more than 103 countries set aside a day to celebrate fatherhood — including Poland, from whence this June 23, 2012, doodle came.
