London’s economy was booming, its population was growing, but the city always knew it was going to be the terrorists’ next target—authorities just didn’t know when or how. And then on July 7, 2005, 52 people were killed and more than 700 were injured when bombs exploded in the Tube and on the upper deck of a bus in Tavistock Square—the worst attack on the British capital since World War II. French architect Nicolas Thioulouse, who was in a train underground when the bombs went, told TIME, “I had the feeling I was in a fish tank, seeing people in the opposite car with their faces completely covered by blood.”
