It was the catchy tune of the year, but Carly Rae Jepsen’s hit single might have disappeared into the black hole of cheesy one-hit-wonders had it not been for Justin Bieber’s stamp of approval. While the song leaves little in the way of actual lyrical merit, its earworm tendencies had us all singing along this year – including such celebrities as Bieber, Katy Perry and Barack Obama (well, sort of), who molded their own lip-dub videos of the track. “Call Me Maybe” was released in September as a small-time hit from the Canadian Idol runner-up — not exactly the pedigree one would expect from of a worldwide celebrity. But the deluge of star-studded lip-dub videos spun the tune into our collective consciousness by April, and pretty soon a mainstream hit was born. We were all mouthing along with the song, then dancing along with it, hearing it play in TV ads and even thinking we were clever in putting it on our business cards. Laughable lyrics or not, here’s betting that a significant percentage of Americans know them by heart.
